Over the last month or so I've been involved with a communal take on Project SMiLE at Matt Fraction's forum. Project SMiLE is a CD-ROM containing comprehensive information about and recordings from the Beach Boys' doomed Smile album. While some of the Smile tunes were resurrected for later Beach Boys and Brian Wilson albums, most of the material never officially saw the light of day.

Our take on Project SMiLE was about taking the available music -- some complete songs, some takes only a few seconds long -- and play producer, creating a whole album from the broken pieces. My take added in some related, non-Smile material and became a 41-minute, 17-track symphony (19.3MB). The process was really quite interesting and I only regret that I'm not as good with my audio software as I could be.
